The shape of things to come— Buckyballs are popular in fields such as nanotechnology, materials science, electronics and medicine.
Carbon is an amazing element that can take many forms; the most famous being diamond, coal, and graphite. In 1985 a new form (allotrope) of carbon, C60, was discovered; it was named buckminsterfullerene in honor of R. Buckminster Fuller because the molecular shape resembles Fuller's geodesic dome.
In 1970, Eiji Osawa predicted the existence of the C60 molecule, which was discovered in 1985, for which Harold Kroto, Robert Curl and Richard Smalley were awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. It also gave rise to a new field of chemistry, the exploration of fullerenes.
With potential applications ranging from electronics to superconductivity to drug delivery to nanotechnology, fullerenes are an exciting part of the future that, by the standards of today's technology, seem downright magical.
